William
Mitchell Lovick
"……The
other one of his first boys, William Mitchell Lovick decided
that the early city of Melbourne was no good for him. Around
about that time (1860), gold was discovered here in the
Howqua River, so he hightailed it to Merrijig and followed
the gold to the Howqua River and became a miner. He found
that there wasn't much money in digging gold so he thought
the best thing to do was to start a little shanty pub. By
the time the late 1880's came he was the last bloke left
because there was no bloody gold and no miners, all he was
left with was a whole heap of titles to a few blocks. So
he left it all behind and went back to Merrijig, he married
and so sprang the Lovicks from there....and we've kept on
going ever since……"
